Denggi

Fakta;

How to check Memory Utilization in Linux

There're a lot commands to check the memory utilization in linux. However, do we really understand the output of each command? Either using free, top and others command, we'll see the result showed that the memory is almost fully utilized.

Actualy memory is not used by application, but it is used for disk caching. If memory is not fully utilized by kernel than it is wasted, by keeping data in cache when an application needs data again it can be provided faster.

If you want to see the memory from the perspective of application you should look at +- buffers/cache line, the free column of this line shows you the memory that can be used for applications.

In the case below my server using 1.1GB of memory.
# free -m
--------------------total --used----free---shared---buffers---cached
Mem: -------------3990--3583----406--------0-------135-----2289
-/+ buffers/cache:------1158----2832
Swap:--------------2015-----0----2015

WD TV™ HD Media Player brings media collection to the big screen

sapa yang rajin sedut (download) bleh la lepas ni tgk kat HD TV. Tak payah dah susah2 nk convert ke VCD/DVD format

-----
WD, the world's leader in external storage solutions, today introduced a simple way for consumers to play their stored digital content on their HDTV in Full-HD 1080p resolution. The WD TV™ Media Player connects to a user's TV or home theater and plays digital movies, music and photos from WD's My Passport™ portable drive or other USB mass storage device.

According to research firm IDC, nearly 334 million GB of photos and more than 3.1 billion GB of video will be stored on consumer desktop and laptop computers in 2008. The research firm expects that to increase to 400 million GB and 5.8 billion GB, respectively, by 2010.

These large personal digital libraries are all but trapped on users' computers. In order to play their content on their TV, consumers have struggled with clumsy solutions such as copying onto multiple CDs and DVDs or connecting their PCs to their TV via wires or complicated home networking solutions. The WD TV HD Media Player enables consumers to easily and elegantly access their high-definition content on the biggest screen in the home.

Users leave the WD TV HD Media Player connected to their TVs and simply plug in up to two My Passport USB drives or other USB mass storage devices loaded with HD media. Using the included remote control, they can navigate and play their content with the media player's high-definition on-screen menu. With My Passport drives now available in 500 GB capacities, users can build large collections on multiple drives, all playable by WD TV.

Navigating content on USB drives is fast and easy with WD TV HD Media Player's remote control and on-screen menu. Content can be viewed either by filename or thumbnails of photos, album covers or movie cover art. In addition, automatic media aggregation lets the viewer see all their media by media type in one menu regardless of its location in folders or drives.

"As leaders in external storage, we have become the trusted brand for storing and backing up large media collections for consumers around the world," said Jim Welsh, senior vice president and general manager for WD's Branded Products and Consumer Electronics Groups. "Our best-selling My Passport portable drives help customers carry their media library with them anywhere but until now, there has been no easy, affordable way to access and play all that content in their living rooms. The WD TV HD Media Player effectively unlocks all that content from the storage device and lets people enjoy it on their biggest screen and best sound system."

Features of the WD TV HD Media Player include:

Designed for WD's My Passport portable drives, it also plays content from WD My Book® family of drives and most popular USB drives, digital cameras, camcorders, and portable media players that can be recognized as mass storage devices;

How-to: Disable direct root login on linux

This steps is important for the IT Administrator in dealing with any ISO / Auditors

-----
An additional security measure where we prevent direct root logins and instead create a user to login and then use a command ‘su –‘ to gain root privileges.

The only risk in this procedure is that you may prevent root login but forget to add the user to the root group - effectively locking yourself out of the system.

Follow the steps below and you will not face a problem.

STEP 1: Let us create a user and add it to the sysadmin group.

For e.g. we want to create a user 'Ahmad' and give him root privileges.

SSH into your server as root and follow the below commands to create a user.

#groupadd sysadmin
#useradd ahmad –gsysadmin
#passwd ahmad
enteryouruserpasswordhere
verifyyouruserpasswordhere

STEP 2: Add 'sysadmin' group to 'root' group.

#vi /etc/group

scroll until you find 'sysadmin' group
sysadmin:x:20:
add root at the end as below
sysadmin:x:20:root
and save the file

You have successfully added a 'sysadmin' group to the 'root' group who will be able to 'su -' to root.

TESTING
Before we disable root login, let us check if the user can login and su – to gain root privileges.

Logout from ssh
SSH into your server as 'ahmad'
Login as: ahmad
Password : enteryouruserpasswordhere
su –
password: enter root password here

You have successfully logged in and have root privileges. Now let us disable root login.

STEP 3: Disable Direct Root Login

1. Edit the file for SSH logins
#vi /etc/ssh/sshd_config

2. Find the line
#PermitRootLogin yes
Uncomment it (Remove #) and change to
PermitRootLogin no

3. Save the file enter

4. Now you can restart SSH
#/etc/rc.d/init.d/sshd restart

Now, no one will be able to login to root with out first logging in as 'ahmad' and 'su -' to root, and you will be forcing the use of a more secure protocol.

AirAsia does away with fuel fees on all flights

wow!!!.. selamat melancung semua..
Book from 12 - 16 Nov 08 | Travel from 22 Jun - 24 Oct 2009

Passengers on AirAsia and AirAsia X flights will no longer have to pay a fuel surcharge for both local and international flights.

AirAsia Bhd group chief executive officer Datuk Seri Tony Fernandes said with the move – effective midnight yesterday – passengers need only pay the fare, airport tax and administrative fee.

AirAsia becomes the first airline in the world to do away with the fuel surcharge for all its flights.

Previously, passengers paid an average of RM47.

Fernandes, however, added that he could not guarantee that the airline would not reimpose the surcharge should world fuel prices skyrocket again.

“I would be crazy to say I’ll never impose a fuel surcharge. But we will resist for as long as we can.”

The check-in baggage handling fee, however, would remain. “We imposed that (in April) for three reasons – fuel prices, to limit luggage, and to be more environmentally friendly.

The lighter the plane, the less emissions there will be,” he said.

Fernandes also announced that beginning today, the airline would be offering 500,000 free seats covering all its destinations.

The booking period is until Sunday, and the travel period is from June 22 to Oct 24 next year.

“There are two ways to deal with a slow economy. You’ve got to give more value, and you’ve got to stimulate people to travel. That’s what we’re doing now,” he said.

Asked how the he planned to deal with the impact of the fuel surcharge removal, he replied:

“Higher load factor and newer initiatives to increase our revenue will help cover it. We’re keeping our 76% load factor, while adding 20% more seats. We’ll also look at other ways of increasing revenue.”

Also present at the announcement was Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Shahrir Abdul Samad, who applauded AirAsia’s move.

In an immediate reaction, Malaysia Airlines (MAS) senior general manager (sales) Datuk Bernard Francis said MAS had already reduced its fuel surcharge by 50%-73%.

“Our sales surged by 400%. We are looking at reducing the surcharge further to give customers what they want – low fare plus five-star products and services,” he said in a statement.

He added that what was special about its promotion was that passengers could travel almost immediately.

Cheaper nasi kandar, teh tarik and roti canai

Sebelum minyak naik, roti bom (anak aku suka) kat kedai mamak yg selalu aku beli RM1.70. Lepas minyak naik, harga dah jadi RM2.00. Padahal dalam roti tu cuma letak sikit marjerin dengan kaya. Roti kosong pun dah RM1. Nasib baik ada pakcik jual kat tepi jalan. Roti Bom RM1 and Roti kosong 80sen. tapi jauh sket la dari rumah aku.

-----
KUALA LUMPUR: Consumers in the Klang Valley have reason to smile - the prices of nasi kandar, teh tarik and roti canai are being reduced immediately.

Nasi kandar will see a reduction of 20 sen a plate, while roti canai (and other roti items such as roti telur, roti pisang, etc) and teh tarik will see a reduction of 10 sen each.

This is because the Muslim Restaurant Operators Association (Presma) and the Malaysian Indian Restaurant Owners’ Association (Primas) have decided to support the Government’s move on price reduction.

However, the price reduction will be on a voluntary basis, and there is no fixed maximum price for these three food items.

Prices down Workers at an Indian Muslim restaurant in Petaling Jaya busy preparing roti canai and teh tarik Monday as a notice on the price reduction is displayed for customers.

Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Shahrir Samad said consumers could check the prices against the price-list in the restaurants.

“All such restaurants must have a price-list. It’s an offence for them not to have one,” he told a press after launching the Price Reduction Campaign yesterday.

Presma president Jamarulkhan Kadir said the prices of the three items, however, would differ depending on the location of the restaurants.

“Of course, the prices of teh tarik in Bangsar and Balakong would be different,” he said.
Price concerns: Shahrir (seated, in white shirt) speaking to newsmen after launching the Price Reduction Campaign in Kuala Lumpur yesterday. With him were (from left) Jamarulkhan, Deputy Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Jelaing Mersat, Primas deputy president T. Muthusamy.

Jamarulkhan said the price range in the Klang Valley was between RM4 and RM5.50 for nasi kandar, 90 sen and RM1.50 for teh tarik, and 70 sen and RM1.20 for roti canai.

“We will start with our 200 members in the Klang Valley, and soon, we hope this move will be adopted by all our 4,500 members nationwide.

“As for restaurants that refuse to bring their prices down, consumers can choose to not eat there, and go to another restaurant which supports this campaign,” he said.

Asked if such a move would incur losses for the restaurant operators, he replied: “No, it will only lower our profit margin.”

Asked if there were plans to include more items for price reduction, he said: “Slowly.”
